Selecting the Best Diamond Wedding Sets

A diamond is forever, as the old saying goes. Selecting the best diamond wedding sets is the most important decision that you will ever make when it comes to jewelry and accessories.

Why?

Not only will your stone last as long as time endures, but your entire wedding set will be something that you will likely keep for the rest of your life.

There are many factors that go into selecting your wedding set. Becoming familiar with each consideration will help ensure that you always experience happiness when you glance at your finger, instead of a lifetime of regret.

Benefits of Custom Settings

There are hundreds of diamond wedding sets that can be purchased ready-made. However, for a truly personal presentation, selecting a custom stone and setting is recommended.

This will give you something uniquely and exclusively yours. This will also allow you to choose a more suitable design than what you would otherwise settle for with standard showroom selections.

Stone Shape

Each person has their own preference when it comes to a diamond's shape. However, it's best to keep in mind that your choice for settings will largely be determined by what stone shape you choose.

In addition, different stone shapes are a better match for different hand shapes and sizes, so never be shy to ask the advice of your jewelry professional. They should be familiar with what looks best and steer you towards the most flattering combinations.

In the event that your opinions do not correspond, however, always favor your own preference. You after all, will be the one who will be wearing the diamond wedding set.

Understanding the 4 C's

Jewelers use four characteristics to determine the quality of a diamond: carat, cut, color and clarity. An understanding of each of these features makes it easier to compare diamonds and make a more informed decision about the value of your selection.

Most people are familiar with carat. This is the standard term that is used to indicate how large or small the diamonds. Having a big stone has a significant draw to many women.

However, other characteristics must get equal attention for this to be the determining factor. A large stone of poor quality will look much worse than as smaller stone with the other four characteristics perfectly matched.

The cut of your diamond is usually an indication of what shape the diamond is in. For example, a stone may be cut in a marquise, round or heart shape. However, there is more to cut than shape.

The quality of each facet, including the proper angles and proportions, also reflects on the rating that a stone receives for cut. Cut is considered, by many experts, to be the most important characteristic that a diamond carries.

Color Grading

Unlike the other characteristics, the quality of color is already present in each stone. It can not be changed or affected by the craftsmanship or skill of the jeweler.

Color grading begins with complete colorless, followed by ranges with slightly increasing yellow saturation down to the lower color grades which show a clear yellow coloration:

D - Blue White or Exceptional White+
E - Ice White or Exceptional White
F - Fine White or Rare White+
G - White or Rare White
H - Top Commercial White or White
I, J - Commercial White or Slightly Tinted White
K, L - Top Silver Cape or Tinted White
M, N, O - Silver Cape or Tinted Colors1 (TC1)
P, Q, R - Light Cape or Tinted Colors2 (TC2)
S, T, U - Cape or Tinted Colors3 (TC3)
V, W, X, Y, Z - Dark or Tinted Colors4 (TC4)

Colored Diamonds (Fancy Colors)

Diamond wedding sets with no color are rated as D-F on the color scale and are more valuable than stones carrying a G-Z color rating.

The only exception to this is with diamonds that are valued because of their unusual color, such as rose-colored or blue stones. These surpass even colorless diamonds in their demand and overall value.

The final characteristic, clarity, is often confused with color and cut. Clarity has more to do with the final sparkle of a cut stone.

During the natural process of diamond formation, it is very common to see residual carbon in an otherwise perfect stone. These are known as inclusions.

A skilled diamond cutter works to cut the stone to reduce these incidences. Diamond wedding sets with little to no inclusions rates higher on the scale for clarity.
