Small Loose Diamonds - What You Need to Know

Small loose diamonds are the starting point for creating many stunning pieces of jewelry. There are many places that you can buy diamonds that have not been set, from jewelry stores to online retailers.

Learn About the 4C's

Whether you are looking for antique diamonds, solitaire diamonds or stones suitable for a special occasion (such as wedding day diamonds or engagement diamonds), the purchase process starts with assessing the quality of the stone you are buying.

To do this, you will need to know about the 4Cs of selecting diamonds -- the carat weight, the clarity, the color and the cut. These will also form part of any diamond appraisals you might commission from an independent appraiser.

So what exactly do these things mean and how do they affect your diamond buying decisions?

Carat

Most people have heard the term carat with regards to diamonds. With loose diamonds this refers to the weight of the precious stone. This may also be measured in points with 100 points equaling one carat.

The weight of the stone is a good starting point for choosing diamonds though it is also important to consider the quality of the stones in other ways. That's where the rest of the 4Cs come in.

Color

One of the most attractive qualities in a diamond -- except for rare color diamonds -- is its colorlessness. Diamonds are color graded on a scale from D to Z, with grades up to I looking colorless to the naked eye.

Clarity

Another important measure is clarity which is graded on a six point scale. This refers to the presence or absence of blemishes or, as they are known in the trade, inclusions. Most diamonds have some blemishes as they are naturally occurring; those that don't are graded as flawless and are much more valuable and costly.

Cut

Finally, you need to consider the way the diamond is cut. This will affect how the stone reflects light and how brilliant it is.

Popular cuts include cushion cut diamonds as well as older cuts more popular for antique diamonds. With antique stones it is also useful to pay attention to the provenance -- a diamond created by Tiffany will command a premium price. Follow these guidelines and you will soon be able to choose the right small loose diamonds for your jewelry.
